Thoughts I had while the dental hygenist told me I needed to floss more…

While this woman has her hands in my mouth, scraping plague with tools that look like they belong in a psych ward, I start thinking about the generation I am living in and what a bizarre time it is to be growing up. With the advent of such sophisticated and low cost computers, communication has completely changed.

And then I started thinking about trying to raise a child in such an enviornment where as long as you have an internet connection in your home, said child could be exposed to anything under the sun; death, mistrust, betrayel, nudity, swear words, ANYTHING.

And then I started thinking about how great it would be to try and raise a child in such an envionment where the flow of information is so superfluous that by spending as little as 10 minutes online you can learn UNIX.

And then lastly and most peculiarly, I started thinking about social networking sites. For how, for most sites, I use my last name, simoes, as my username because it’s usually not taken and it’s easy to remember. Will my children be pissed that I took their last name as my username for social networking sites they may want to sign up for. Will they be pissed that vimeo.com/simoes is MY page of videos or that last.fm/user/Simoes brings them to their dad’s personal audio tracking page? But then I thought about how bizarre it would be to have children that are signed up for the same social networking sites I am or to be signed up for social networking sites in general. Although I guess I really don’t plan on having children anytime soon and most of these sites probably won’t be around long enough to see my children on their hit counters, these thoughts still crossed my mind. And then the dentist told me to go schedule my next 6 month appointment.
